Aufgewachsen bin ich in Speyer am Rhein. Nach einem Studium in München (MA, LMU München 1998) zog ich für weitere Studien nach Grossbritannien, wo ich an der Universität Oxford einen BPhil (2000) und einen DPhil (2004) erwarb. Von 2004 bis 2007 arbeitete ich als Supernumerary Teaching Fellow am St. John's College, Oxford, und von Oktober 2007 bis März 2019 war ich erst Lecturer, später Senior Lecturer in Philosophy an der University of York (UK). Im April 2019 übernahm ich eine Professur für theoretische Philosophie an der Universität Konstanz, und von April 2021 bis März 2024 war ich Prorektorin für Internationales, Gleichstellung und Diversity an der Universität Konstanz. Seit Oktober 2024 leite ich nun den Lehrstuhl für theoretische Philosophie an der Universität Erlangen. Kontakt zu meinem alten Department in Großbritannien unterhalte ich weiterhin als ‚Honorary Visiting Professor in Philosophy‘ an der University of York.
Der Schwerpunkt meiner Forschung liegt auf dem Gebiet der Philosophie des Geistes. Ein Großteil meiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit und der resultierenden Publikationen hat sich bisher in verschiedener Hinsicht mit dem Phänomen der Erinnerung beschäftigt, aber ich habe auch Arbeiten zu den Themen der Vorstellung, der Aufmerksamkeit und der Emotionen publiziert. In jüngerer Zeit habe ich mich in meiner Forschung unter anderem auch einer allgemeineren Eigenschaft unserer mentalen Leben zugewandt, nämlich der Tatsache, dass wir manchmal selbst aktiv mitbestimmen können, wie sich unser geistiges Leben entwickelt. Wichtige philosophische Fragen sind dann, wie wir diese Fähigkeit erklären können und welche axiologischen Implikationen sich aus dieser Fähigkeit ergeben. Das Projekt trägt den Arbeitstitel ‚Shaping Our Mental Lives‘ und einige seiner Kerngedanken finden sich in Debus: 2016-c und Debus: 2020 (siehe ‚Publikationen‘ unten).
